A senior Iranian official on May 9 threatened Bahrain and other governments with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz “forever” if they support a U.S.-backed U.N. resolution aimed at Tehran. Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, posted the warning on X, saying governments that side with Washington would face “severe consequences.”
In his post Azizi wrote: “We warn governments, including microstates like Bahrain, that siding with the U.S.-backed resolution will bring severe consequences. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital lifeline; do not risk closing it on yourselves FOREVER.” The message was posted on X on May 9, 2026.
The comments followed a U.S. revision of a draft U.N. Security Council resolution that demands Iran stop attacks, the laying of sea mines, and other interference with shipping in the strategic waterway. Reuters has reported that Bahrain is among the governments supporting the draft resolution.
The proposed resolution also calls on Iran to cease threatening commercial shipping and to disclose the locations of sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil passes. The developments come amid broader pressure on Iran, including recent U.S. sanctions on companies accused of aiding Iran’s weapons programs.
