Ukraine launched hundreds of drones across Russia on Sunday in what officials described as one of Kyiv’s largest aerial attacks of the war, killing at least six people and causing widespread damage.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense said it destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones overnight. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that about 600 drones were detected heading toward the capital, and that roughly a third were intercepted over the Moscow region.
In the Moscow region, Governor Andrey Vorobyov said an 83-year-old man was killed when a Ukrainian drone struck a private home. He also confirmed that a drone attack started a fire at a Wildberries warehouse in Podolsk; Russian media images showed heavy black smoke rising from the site.
In Russia’s southwestern Rostov region, Governor Yury Slyusar said an attack involving more than 150 drones struck three towns, killing five people, damaging several homes and a railway station, and igniting a forest fire.
Analysts and officials say Ukraine has intensified strikes this year, increasingly using long-range missiles and swarms of drones to target military-industrial facilities and energy infrastructure inside Russia. Large Wildberries depots have been hit repeatedly, destroying merchandise and bringing the conflict into the Russian domestic sphere.
At the same time, Ukraine reported fresh Russian strikes on its territory. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a Russian missile strike on Kryvyi Rih killed two people and wounded 14, and that one person was killed in Sumy. He added that a separate Russian attack on Kyiv sparked fires and injured six people.
“Wherever the Russians can reach with their ballistic missiles, they strike civilian infrastructure,” Zelenskyy wrote, saying air-raid alerts continued across many regions amid another wave of drones. The casualty and damage figures above come from statements by Russian and Ukrainian officials and have not been independently verified.
