Amazon Invests in New Nuclear Facility in Indiana

The tech giant Amazon is partnering with X-energy and AEP to build a new nuclear plant in Indiana, aiming to bring renewable energy to the region.

In a bold move towards sustainability, Amazon has entered into an agreement with X-energy and American Electric Power (AEP) to finance a new nuclear power plant in Indiana. This facility will succeed the decommissioned Breed Generating Station, which relied on coal, located in Sullivan County's Fairbanks.

Project Overview

The planned nuclear plant is projected to generate up to 960 megawatts of clean energy. This energy will support not only Amazon’s expansive data centers but also contribute to the local power grid. Although a timeline for the start of construction or operational launch has not been revealed, Amazon estimates that the project could create around 1,000 jobs during its construction phase and 100 permanent job opportunities upon completion.

Innovative Reactor Technology

The Indiana facility plans to utilize 12 Xe-100 small modular reactors (SMRs). These advanced reactors are still under development and licensing and are designed to be versatile in their cooling methods, employing air, water, or a combination. This innovative design allows them to be situated in areas with limited water resources, ensuring the local communities' water needs are preserved.

A Look Back and Future Aspirations

Interestingly, this new initiative is occurring in a state with a notable history of nuclear projects. The Marble Hill Nuclear Power Plant, which began construction in the 1970s, was abandoned in 1983 after over $2.5 billion had been invested. It has since been in the process of demolition since 2008. The financials surrounding Amazon’s investment in the new facility have not been disclosed, leaving some uncertainty about its economic scale compared to past efforts.

This Indiana nuclear venture is not Amazon's first collaboration with X-energy. Together, they aim to add more than 5 gigawatts of nuclear energy capacity across the United States by 2039. Last October, Amazon announced plans for another significant project, the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility in Washington, also set to feature 12 advanced reactors, though that construction is expected to be delayed until the end of this decade.

Tech Industry’s Embrace of Nuclear Energy

Amazon joins other major technology firms, including Meta, Microsoft, and Google, in exploring nuclear energy solutions for their data centers. These investments are part of a growing commitment from the tech industry to enhance energy infrastructure and address environmental concerns associated with data center expansion. While it will take years for these nuclear plants to become operational, they represent a shift towards sustainable energy practices.

As the push for environmentally friendly energy sources continues to gain traction, projects like the new Indiana nuclear facility highlight the potential for corporate investment to catalyze advancements in clean energy solutions.
