Editorial Policy
The standards of accuracy, fairness and independence behind everything NewsPluck publishes.
This policy sets out the standards NewsPluck applies to everything it publishes. It exists so readers know what to expect from us and can hold us to it.
Accuracy
We take care to ensure that what we publish is accurate and fairly presented. Facts are checked against reliable sources before publication, and we attribute information clearly so readers can judge where it comes from. Where a fact is disputed or a situation is still developing, we say so rather than presenting it as settled.
Sources
We rely on primary sources wherever possible, including official statements, public records, court documents, data releases and on-the-record interviews, and we draw on established news organisations for reporting we cannot verify first-hand, crediting them where we do. We use anonymous sources only when there is a clear public interest and no other way to obtain the information, and we explain to readers why anonymity was granted.
Fairness and impartiality
Our news coverage aims to be fair to the people and organisations it reports on. When we publish serious allegations, we make reasonable efforts to seek a response from those concerned and report it. We do not allow personal views, commercial relationships or political interests to shape our news reporting.
News and opinion
News articles report and explain events. Opinion and analysis pieces present the views of their authors and are published in our Opinion section, where they are clearly identified. The views expressed in opinion pieces are those of the writer and do not necessarily reflect the position of NewsPluck.
Independence and conflicts of interest
Editorial decisions are made by our editorial team alone. Contributors are expected to declare any interest that could reasonably be seen to affect their work, and we will not assign a story to a writer with a conflict of interest in its subject.
Sponsored content
Advertising and sponsored material are kept separate from editorial content and are always clearly labelled. Advertisers have no influence over our news coverage or opinion pages.
Images
Photographs and illustrations are chosen to support a story and are used in line with their licence. Where an image is illustrative rather than a record of the specific event being reported, it should not be read as depicting the people or places named in the article.
Sensitive subjects
We report on crime, conflict, disasters, suicide and other distressing subjects with care for those affected. We avoid gratuitous detail, respect the privacy of victims and their families, and follow responsible reporting guidelines on suicide and self-harm.
Corrections
When we get something wrong, we correct it promptly and openly. Our approach is described in full in our Corrections Policy.
