The United States Postal Service will issue a postage stamp commemorating Diwali later this year as part of a slate of new releases. The Diwali stamp, scheduled for October, showcases a detailed rangoli design created by Houston artist Sangita Bhutada and photographed by Binay Dixit.
Rangoli is a traditional floor art made from materials like colored rice powder, chalk and flower petals; it is associated with welcoming and good luck during festivals. Bhutada, a native of India and long-time Houston resident, has practiced rangoli for nearly 30 years. The stamp was designed by Jennifer Arnold with William J. Gicker serving as art director.
The USPS noted that Diwali — one of the most important holidays on the Hindu calendar — celebrates the triumph of good over evil and is typically observed over five days. In 2026, the festival’s main day falls on November 8.
In addition to the Diwali stamp, the Postal Service announced upcoming issues honoring the U.S. Coast Guard, Christmas Cookies, Hanukkah (the Jewish festival of lights) and Kwanzaa, which celebrates African-American culture.
