At a rally, Trump called for severe consequences, including death, for officials who leak sensitive information.
During a recent rally in Bullhead City, Arizona, former President Donald Trump voiced strong opinions on the issue of government leaks, suggesting that individuals responsible for leaking classified information to the media should face dire consequences.
Consequences for Leaks
Trump did not hold back, asserting that leakers should be punished severely, even stating, “Leakers should be shot.” He expressed frustration over a past incident where he claimed an operative leak led to the cancellation of a military operation targeting Iran. “Somebody leaked… They ought to go to jail or be shot,” he said, underscoring his anger over the disclosure of sensitive information about military movements.
Reflections on Military Operations
He referred specifically to a planned military strike on Iranian nuclear sites, which was supposed to occur in June 2025. Trump recounted how the timing of the operation was leaked to the press, ultimately forcing him to cancel the mission. His ire was directed at media outlets like The New York Times and CNN, which reported on the operation's details.
Ongoing Crackdown on Leaks
Since returning to the presidency, Trump’s administration has actively sought to deter leaks, proposing that all employees within federal agencies sign nondisclosure agreements. Additionally, reports indicated that around 50 members of the U.S. military’s Joint Staff underwent polygraph examinations, probing their possible sharing of confidential information with the press.
In a move that drew attention, Trump authorized a search of a Washington Post journalist's home as part of an investigation into a contractor alleged to have mishandled classified materials. However, a federal magistrate ruled against his administration’s request to examine the seized data, a decision that was later upheld by a district court.
The Media's Role
During his address, Trump also criticized journalists, likening them to leakers, stating, “Those same people up there, they’re almost as bad as a leaker.” He claimed they often disseminate false information, which he believes classifies them as leakers as well.
Despite the past attempts to enforce strict measures against leaks, including subpoenas for journalists to testify before a grand jury, these efforts faced backlash from media organizations, leading to the withdrawal of those subpoenas.
Trump’s rhetoric suggests ongoing tensions between his administration and the press, indicating a threat to the delicate balance between national security and the freedom of the press.
