Otter's New Work Mode Revolutionizes Meeting Automation

Otter has introduced a Work mode that enhances its AI Chat assistant, streamlining tasks related to meetings.

Introducing Work Mode

Otter has unveiled a significant update with the launch of its Work mode, enhancing its AI Chat assistant to assist users with an array of tasks linked to meetings. This feature is part of Otter's broader initiative to evolve from mere meeting transcription to comprehensive task automation.

Key Features of Work Mode

Announced recently, the Work mode is now available in the AI Chat prompt alongside the traditional Chat feature. While the Chat function allows for direct inquiries and content creation, Work mode is designed for multi-step tasks, showcasing Otter's competitive positioning among other AI platforms like Claude and ChatGPT.

Before a meeting, users can leverage the Work mode to create briefing documents using data from previous conversations and connected applications. Once a meeting concludes, the AI assistant can facilitate a variety of follow-up actions, such as drafting emails, producing documents in various formats including Word, Notion, PDFs, and interactive web pages, and updating records in Salesforce. It's important to note that human oversight is required before the completion of these tasks, ensuring quality control in automation.

Transitioning Features

These new capabilities build upon existing features found in the AI Chat's Advanced mode. Despite the introduction of Work mode, Otter plans to streamline its offerings by removing the Express and Advanced options from the interface, simplifying user experience.

Currently, Work mode is accessible to all paying Otter users without any restrictions on usage, contrasting with the Chat mode, which limits the number of queries based on a user's payment tier. This shift reflects an industry-wide trend where the approach to meeting note-taking is transforming from simple data capture to a more innovative workflow automation paradigm.

A Growing Demand for Automation

Irwin Lazar, a principal analyst at Metrigy, has noted that there’s a growing expectation among business users for meeting tools that not only capture notes but also provide actionable insights based on contextual data from both meetings and other integrated platforms. In fact, a substantial 91% of business professionals desire better access to context that influences decision-making during and after meetings, according to a comprehensive study by Metrigy involving 403 organizations.

Otter's enhancement is timely, considering similar trendlines in meeting solutions like Microsoft Teams and Cisco's Webex, which have started to incorporate intelligent features that facilitate better productivity.

Expansion of Live Assist

Alongside Work mode, Otter has announced that its Live Assist feature is now available for enterprise customers, with plans for broader access to all paid accounts in the near future. This feature aims to provide users with real-time suggestions and guidance during calls, thereby boosting productivity by tracking objectives and messaging flow.

Thomas Randall, a research director at Infotech, expressed that while the concept of assistance during internal meetings is relatively novel, competition is inevitable. As various software vendors incorporate AI capabilities into their solutions, it remains to be seen how Otter will position itself in this dynamic landscape. Nonetheless, for existing users, these advancements are likely to prove highly beneficial in optimizing their workflows.
