Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has become the first Australian leader to get married while in office after he tied the knot with his partner Jodie Haydon on Saturday.
The two married in an intimate, secretive ceremony at The Loge in Canberra attended by close friends, family and a few select ministers.
Who is Jodie Haydon?
Albanese, 62, and Haydon, 45, had been in a relationship for five years. He proposed on Valentine’s Day last year.
Born in 1979, Haydon has a 20-year career in the superannuation industry and has worked in banking and finance. In 2022 she was employed as a women’s officer after serving as a union delegate for the NSW Public Service Association. She was born to school-teacher parents in Sydney and grew up on the Central Coast.
She is currently head of strategic partnerships at Teachers Mutual Bank.
The couple met at a dinner in Melbourne in March 2020, where Haydon called out “up the Rabbitohs” while Albanese was speaking, referencing his favourite South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby league team. Haydon has said she realised she was in love when Albanese was involved in a car accident in 2021.
Haydon accompanied Albanese during the federal election campaigns in 2022 and 2025. Albanese had separated from his wife of 19 years, Carmel Tebbutt, in early 2019.
The wedding’s date and location were kept secret for security reasons. Haydon was walked down the aisle by her parents, Bill and Pauline. Her five-year-old niece was the flower girl, and Albanese’s dog Toto was the ring bearer.
