The World Health Organization said Saturday, March 21, that at least 64 people, including 13 children, were killed and at least 89 others injured when Al Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur was struck on Friday. The attack rendered the hospital non-functional, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on X.
Ghebreyesus said WHO has verified the attack, noting the dead included two female nurses, one male doctor and multiple patients. He urged de-escalation, saying, “Enough blood has been spilled. Enough suffering has been inflicted.”
Sudan descended into widespread conflict in April 2023 after a power struggle between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF blamed the military for the hospital strike. The army denied responsibility, and two military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the strike targeted a nearby police station.
The UN estimates the war has killed more than 40,000 people, though aid groups say the true toll may be far higher. WHO reports that over 2,000 people have been killed in attacks on medical facilities since the conflict began.
