Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a five-nation tour from 15 to 20 May aimed at strengthening trade, investment and strategic cooperation. The itinerary includes official visits to the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy, with bilateral talks, business engagements and a multilateral India‑Nordic Summit.
UAE (15 May)
Modi’s visit begins in the United Arab Emirates, where he will meet President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to discuss energy cooperation, broader regional and global issues, and ways to advance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The visit seeks to boost the extensive trade and investment ties between the two countries; the UAE is India’s third-largest trade partner and has been a major source of investment over the past 25 years. The UAE also hosts a large Indian diaspora of over 4.5 million people.
Netherlands (15–17 May)
At the invitation of Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, Modi will visit the Netherlands—his second trip there since 2017. He is expected to call on King Willem‑Alexander and Queen Máxima and hold talks with PM Jetten. Discussions will build on cooperation in defence, security, innovation, green hydrogen, semiconductors and water management. The Netherlands is a key European trade partner for India, with bilateral trade of about $27.8 billion in FY 2024–25 and cumulative FDI of roughly $55.6 billion.
Sweden (17–18 May)
In Gothenburg, Modi will meet Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to review bilateral relations and explore new cooperation in green transition, AI and emerging technologies, startups, resilient supply chains, defence, space, climate action and people‑to‑people ties. Bilateral trade reached about $7.75 billion in 2025, and Swedish FDI into India totals roughly $2.825 billion for 2000–2025. The two leaders will also address the European Round Table for Industry alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Norway and the India‑Nordic Summit (18–19 May)
Modi’s visit to Norway is his first as prime minister and the first Indian prime ministerial visit to Norway in 43 years. He will call on King Harald V and Queen Sonja and hold talks with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Modi will address the India‑Norway Business and Research Summit, and the 3rd India‑Nordic Summit in Oslo on 19 May will bring together the leaders of Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden. The Summit aims to deepen strategically focused cooperation in technology and innovation, the green transition and renewables, sustainability, the blue economy, defence, space and Arctic issues. India‑Nordic bilateral trade was about $19 billion in 2024; India‑Norway trade was around $2.73 billion in 2024, and Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global has notable investments in Indian markets.
Italy (19–20 May)
Concluding the tour, Modi will visit Italy at the invitation of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. He will meet President Sergio Mattarella and hold talks with PM Meloni, building on momentum from recent high‑level engagement and the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029. Bilateral trade with Italy reached roughly $16.77 billion in 2025, and cumulative FDI stands near $3.66 billion (April 2000–September 2025). Discussions will cover defence and security, clean energy, innovation, science and technology, investment and people‑to‑people ties.
Overall objectives
Across the five stops, the visit is designed to accelerate trade and investment, foster collaboration in emerging technologies and clean energy, strengthen defence and security cooperation, and expand resilient supply chains—aligned with ongoing and prospective India‑EU and India‑EFTA trade arrangements. The engagements combine high‑level political meetings with business and research forums to translate diplomatic momentum into concrete economic and strategic outcomes.
