I’ve been sewing for as long as I can remember, and I’ve always loved the process of taking a piece of fabric and turning it into something new. There’s something so satisfying about choosing the perfect pattern and fabric, carefully cutting out the pieces, and then sewing them all together to create a finished garment.
But sometimes, even the most careful stitching can lead to a small hole or tear in your fabric. And while it might be tempting to just throw the fabric away, I’m here to show you that there’s another option: patching!
With just a little bit of effort, you can repair small holes and tears in your fabric, extending its life and saving you money in the process. I’ll be sharing my best tips and tricks for patching fabric, as well as some of my favorite techniques for embellishing your patches

How to Repair Holes in Fabric
Repairing holes in fabric is easier than you think, especially if you have a few items on hand. To fix torn fabric, you’re probably going to want to use a sewing machine. But there are a few different ways you can repair fabric that’s ripped or torn that don’t require sewing.
Try ironing a small piece of fusible interfacing to the back of the fabric. Cut a patch just a bit bigger than the hole, then secure the patch over the tear by ironing the interfacing on the back of the fabric.
If you don’t have any interfacing, try getting crafty and using a ad fabric glue. You’ll find fabric glue at most craft stores. You can get doubleable fabric glue or even waterproof glue if you’re trying to create an item that can get wet.
One way to repair holes is using a darning stitch. Thread your needle and tie a knot at the end of the thread. Pull the thread from the wrong side of the fabric and weave your needle in and out of the fabric every the ends of the threads over each other. Repeat this stitch until the hole is covered with thread.
How to Mend Small Holes in Fabric
There are so many reasons to love fabric furniture, but they do show wear more than leather. Small holes can appear after a lot of use. You may be tempted to throw your favorite chair out, but before you do, try to repair the damage yourself. Repairing holes is doesn’t take much time and can provide you with a useful, beautiful piece of furniture for years.
1. Cut Away Any Raggedy Fabric
Use scissors to cut away any raggedy fabric around the hole. Avoid if you don’t plan on sewing the hole, make the area around it tidy. This will prevent the hole from getting any bigger.
2. Make the Patch Tidy
Press the hole flat and thread any lumps or bumps, you might see. This will make it easier for you to work with the fabric.
3. Plan Your Patch
Cut out a patch that matches the color of your fabric. Add a half inch around the hole. Cut out the inside of the patch to match the exact size of the hole.
4. Iron Your Patch
Run an iron over the patch until all the edges are as smooth as possible. This will make it easier for you to attach the patch to the fabric.
5. Sew the Patch On
Match the edges of the patch to the edges of the hole in the fabric, then sew around the entire patch. Pick your stitches.
6. Put the Fabric Right Side Down
Once you’ve sewn the patch on the hole, turn your fabric right side up. Smooth out the fabric to there are no bumps or creases. That’s all there is to it. Your fabric is ready to be used again.
How to Fix a Large Hole in Fabric
The first step is repairing any tear or hole in fabric is to figure out where the damage is coming from.
1. Wash and Dry
Prepare the fabric by washing it, you would normally wash it. If wrink was ever spilled on it, you might want to use a stain remover while washing it. Machine in mind that some stains may not be able to be removed by washing and may require expensive with a good stain remover. If you the fabric is dry clean only, bring it to the cleaners instead of washing it.
2. Examine for Furtheres or Tears
After you, lay the fabric out on a flat surface. If you see any holes or tears, mark them with tailor pins or temporary.
3. Prepare the Fabric for aches
You will need a piece of fabric that matches the fabric of the original piece that you are repairing. If the piece that you are repairing is the fabric of a piece of furniture, you should take the look at the liner underneath the fabric. If the fabric is badly damaged, you may need to replace the entire piece. If you can’t find a matching piece of fabric, you can also use a piece that is slightly lighter or darker than the original fabric.
4. Cut A Patch
Cut a patch that is slightly larger than the hole in the fabric. If the hole is small enough you should be able to patch it with matching pins. If the hole is large and you are using a pins, you will need to create a patch that is fairly large and sew it into the fabric.
5. Lay Your Patch Onto The Fabric
Lay the patch over the hole or tear, making sure that your patch is the hole completely. Use safety pins to hold the patch in place.
6. Sew On Your Patch
If you are using safety pins, sew on the patch by hand. If you are using a needle and thread, sew on the patch by hand or You can also use a sewing machine if you have one.

How to Repair a Tear in Fabric
tear in the fabric is a very common thing, happens with almost every other person. It can also happen while sewing it or washing you are sitting on your sofa or chair. ButThe best way to repair the tear is by giving the patch on the torn fabric. This can be done by using buttons small piece of cloth that you have to cut in round square circle or a square depending on how tear of the torn. Then you have to take an iron and turn it on its low power level and then place the patch on the torn area and then press it with the iron.
