North Korean leader Kim Jong Un highlighted the Air Force’s role in exercising nuclear war deterrence while marking the service’s 80th anniversary, state media reported on Sunday, November 30. Photos released by Rodong Sinmun showed Kim observing what appeared to be unmanned aircraft and mobile missile launchers.
A Ukrainian intelligence official told Reuters earlier that North Korea has begun mass production of small, short-range FPV drones and larger medium-range battlefield attack drones. State media images showed Kim, dressed in a long leather coat, attending an air show with his young daughter and touring a display of aircraft including an airborne early-warning plane unveiled earlier this year.
KCNA quoted Kim saying expectations for the Air Force, which “will play a role in the exercise of the nuclear war deterrent,” are “truly great.” He added the Air Force should “resolutely repulse and control all sorts of espionage acts and possible military provocations of the enemies.” Kim said the Air Force would be given new strategic assets but did not provide details.
