An Indian-origin man, identified as 27-year-old Jasman Sekhon, was shot dead in Surrey, British Columbia, in what investigators say appears to be a targeted, gang-related attack.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said the shooting occurred Saturday evening around 6:40 pm at a townhouse complex on the 15100 block of 60 Avenue. IHIT added Sekhon had previous interactions with police and was believed to be involved in the drug trade, and early indications point to organised-crime links.
Witnesses told CTV News Sekhon was chased by two young men wearing masks and hoodies. They opened fire after he fell to the ground. A neighbour who rushed out said Sekhon had multiple visible gunshot wounds and was clearly dead. CCTV footage reportedly captured about 30 shots being fired behind the complex along with screams.
Responding officers found a man suffering gunshot wounds; despite life-saving efforts he was pronounced dead at the scene, IHIT said.
About 15 minutes after the shooting police discovered a blue Hyundai SUV burning near 186 Street and 44 Avenue. IHIT noted such vehicles are often associated with gang-related violence.
“This was a brazen shooting in what is usually a quiet neighbourhood,” said IHIT spokesperson Sergeant Freda Fong. Investigators are working to understand the circumstances and identify everyone involved.
Authorities are asking anyone who was at the townhouse complex or near the burning vehicle on March 28 between 6 and 7:30 pm to come forward with information or video footage.
This marks the third recent time Surrey’s homicide team has been called to the city.
