The History of the Farmington Mall
The History of the Farmington Mall
Looking back, it’s hard to imagine that at one point in time, the Farmington Mall was considered the premier shopping destination in the Four Corners region. But that was the case for several decades, as the mall helped define retail in the San Juan Basin during its existence.
The mall opened in 1979, anchored by Sears and JCPenney, with The Fashion Bar and an eight-screen United Artists theater also calling the mall home. The mall was developed by Homart Development Company, a real estate subsidiary of Sears, which built many of the stores in the mall.
The mall was built on part of the historic Farmington Country Club, which had opened in the 1930s. The course was sold off in pieces over the years, and by the late 1970s, the final nine holes of the course were sold off to make way for the mall.
The mall was enclosed and air conditioned, a welcome departure from the often sweltering summers in the region. At one point, the mall housed approximately 60 stores and restaurants. The mall also had a fountain in the center of the mall, which was removed at some point.
The movie theater was expanded to 12 screens in 1988, and remained the largest movie theater in the region until the mid-1990s, when a new 16-screen Cinemark theater was built on the west side of town.
The mall thrived throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, but the opening of the Durango Mall in Durango, Colorado in 1997 took a toll on the Farmington Mall. The Durango Mall was significantly larger, with more modern stores and a newer movie theater, and siphoned off business from the Farmington Mall.
The mall began to decline in the late 1990s, and by the early 2000s, many of the stores and restaurants were gone. The mall was sold to new owners in 2005, who announced plans to demolish the structure and redevelop the property.
These plans never came to fruition, and the mall sat vacant for several years. In 2014, the city of Farmington purchased the mall, with plans to demolish it and create a new mixed-use development on the site.
In 2016, the city began demolition of the mall, and in 2018, construction began on the new mixed-use development, which will include retail, residential,

The Parking at the Farmington Mall
The Parking at the Farmington Mall
The Parking at the Farmington Mall is a nightmare. I mean, it’s so bad that I actually have to plan my shopping trips around when I think the parking lot will be the least busy. And even then, I’m usually still stuck circling the lot for what feels like hours.
I know I’m not the only one who feels this way, either. I mean, have you ever seen the looks of sheer terror on the faces of other shoppers as they frantically search for a parking spot? It’s like we’re all just waiting for the other shoe to drop.
But why is the Parking at the Farmington Mall so bad? Is it just a matter of too many people trying to park in too small of a space? Or is there something else going on here?
I think the real reason the Parking at the Farmington Mall is so bad is because the mall management team doesn’t care about their customers. I mean, if they did, they would have done something about the parking situation long ago.
But instead, they just sit back and let us all suffer. And I for one am sick of it. Something needs to be done about the Parking at the Farmington Mall, and soon.
Until then, I’ll just continue to plan my shopping trips around when I think the parking lot will be the least busy. Even if it means I have to go to the mall at midnight.
