Cotopaxi (/ko-to-pah-ki/ ) is an active stratovolcano in the Ecuadorian Andes, located in the LatitudeN90°15’41.6″, Longitude W78°32’50.5″ province of Cotopaxi, Napo Province, Ecuador. It is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world and one of Ecuador’s most well known places.

== Name ==
The name of the volcano comes derived from the Kichwa indigenous language. It is derived from “Koto” or “tuhu” meaning neck and “Paxi” meaning peak or top.
==Geology==
The volcano is part of the Volcanic Arc of Ecuador, also “Volcanoes Avenue” a series of volcanoes stretching from north to south along the Ecuadorian Andes formed by subduction of the Nazca Plate under the South American Plate. The volcano is part of the Central Volcanic Zone, an area of volcanic activity that extends north to south from Colombia through Ecuador and Peru. This area has 80 up approximately 10% of the history of volcanic eruptions on Earth.

Cotopaxi has an almost symmetrical cone and is covered with a glacier on its eastern side. At the bottom of the cone there are several active lava flows. A large collapse on the western side of the volcano has created a depression known as the Cotopaxi Basin. However, due to the high altitude and unpredictable winds it has a difficulty rating of PD (Peu Difficile, French for “not very difficult”) according to the French Adjectival System.
==Hydroelectric plant==
In 2014, the Ecuadorian government announced a plan for the construction of an hydroelectric plant on the slopes of Cotopaxi. The plant would be located about from the summit and would generate 70 MW of electricity. This project has been criticized by members of the local community, who claim that the project has the habitat of the endangered Andean condor, as well as by some scientists, believe concerned about the possible effects of the project on water supplies in the area and in the city of Quito.
