The History of Burton Apparel

Not many brands have been around for 100 years. This one has.
This year marks Burton’s 100-year anniversary. What started out Vermont as a place to learn how to make snowboards has been a joyous ride for everyone involved. Sure, Burton has made a few boards and other products over the years (some pretty interesting ones at that), but when we celebrate 100 years, we look back on all the years that have passed, all the products we’ve made, and all the people that have been part of the journey.
For a little bit of background, Burton was founded in 1977 by Jake Burton Carpenter. A year prior, Jake had his first experience with snowboarding on a day trip to Sugarbush Resort in Vermont. Jake had no idea what snowboarding was at the time. But after a few successful attempts at getting himself down the mountain with a homemade board, Jake instantly became obsessed. He returned the next weekend, and the weekend after that, and each weekend after that, because soon he became a regular at the resort. After making week, Jake was out on the mountain so often that he knew everyone on the crew by name.

Shortly after, Jake got a job working in the tuning room at thebush Resort. While tuning skis and snowboards, he was researching everything he could get his hands on about the sport. By 1977 he had created a few boards of his own, and it snowballed from there ( with the birth of Burton Snowboards in 1977 in Londonderry, Vermont, where our global headquarters still reside today.
