The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he offered India’s support for former prime minister Khaleda Zia, who is critically ill in a Dhaka hospital with a chest infection.
“BNP expresses its sincere gratitude to the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, for his thoughtful message and kind wishes for the speedy recovery of BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia,” the party posted on X. “BNP deeply appreciates this gesture of goodwill and the expression of readiness to extend support,” it added.
Modi had shared his concern about Zia’s condition on social media, offering prayers and best wishes: “Deeply concerned to learn about the health of Begum Khaleda Zia, who has contributed to Bangladesh’s public life for many years. Our sincere prayers and best wishes for her speedy recovery.” He also wrote, “India stands ready to extend all possible support, in whatever way we can.”
Media reports say Zia is “extremely unwell” and on ventilation, with both local and international specialists involved in her care. The three-time prime minister was admitted to Evercare Hospital on November 23 after developing a chest infection affecting her heart and lungs, and was moved to the coronary care unit four days later as her condition worsened.
The 80-year-old leader is also dealing with multiple other health issues, including liver and kidney problems, diabetes, arthritis, and eye conditions. “She is extremely unwell. The entire nation is praying for her recovery… She is seriously ill, and our doctors are making every possible effort. Local and foreign specialists are involved in her treatment. They are trying their best,” BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.
