Social media is buzzing with rumours that former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan, jailed since August 2023 on multiple charges, has been killed in prison. The rumours gained traction after a tweet from the Baluchistan ministry of foreign affairs account—an outlet previously linked to misinformation—allegedly cited news reports saying Khan was killed by Asim Munir and the ISI.
The tweet read in part: “Reports are now surfacing from inside the prisons of Punjabi Pakistan that Imran Khan, who was being held in custody, has been killed by Asim Munir and his ISI administration according to several news outlets. If this information is confirmed to be true, it marks the absolute end of terrorist Pakistan. The collapse of its last remaining legitimacy will begin the moment the truth is exposed to the world.”
Other users on X have also claimed Khan was killed or raised concerns about his safety, with some citing unspecified “credible sources” that blamed the ISI. Similar allegations circulated months earlier after a forged press release carrying the Pakistani foreign ministry letterhead claimed Khan had been murdered.
The rumours come as Khan’s three sisters—Noreen Niazi, Aleema Khan and Dr Uzma Khan—remain camped outside Adiala Jail with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters after being denied a meeting with him for a month. They have demanded an impartial inquiry into what they described as a “brutal” police assault on them and supporters outside the jail, saying police pounced on and assaulted them while they waited to see Khan.
