I have been asked on numerous occasions why we still have the 950 area code here in the Rio Grande Valley. The answer is quite simple, we just haven’t needed a new area code. According to an article I read from the Harlingen newspaper back in 1993, the 950 area code was expected to be used up by the year 2000. Well, here we are in 2015 and we are still using the same area code we have used for over 30 years. In fact, the article stated that it would take until at least the year 2010 before we would need a new area code.
I remember when I first moved here to the Rio Grande Valley back in 1992, I was surprised to find out that the Rio Grande Valley still used a four-digit dialing system. I was also surprised to find out that the Valley had only one area code. I had grown up in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex where there were several area codes in use. I quickly learned that the only reason we still have the 950 area code is because the Valley has not grown as fast as other areas of Texas. In fact, the article I mentioned earlier stated that the Valley would probably never need a second area code.
