Dayton James Webber, 27, a well-known quadruple amputee and former American Cornhole League player, has been arrested on suspicion of murder in Charlottesville, Virginia. Webber lost all four limbs after contracting a bacterial infection as an infant and gained attention as the ACL’s first quadruple amputee competitor.
Authorities say Webber is accused in the death of 27-year-old Bradrick Wells. Investigators report that the two were in a car on Sunday at about 10:25 pm, with Wells in the front passenger seat and two others in the back. An argument broke out; police allege Webber shot Wells and then pulled the vehicle over in the La Plata area.
A Charles County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said the dispute “escalated rather quickly” but investigators do not yet know the cause of the argument. Officials also said it is unclear how the weapon was fired and whether any adaptations were used; Webber has posted videos on his YouTube channel showing him practicing with a firearm. “What I would say to answer any questions about how he did this, I would simply refer people to the internet,” the spokesperson said, noting Webber is “a well-documented individual.”
After the shooting, Webber reportedly asked the other passengers to help remove Wells’ body from the car; they refused, exited the vehicle and fled. Police were alerted shortly before 10:30 pm and began searching for Webber. Hours later, a Charlotte Hall, Maryland resident reported finding a body in their yard. Deputies obtained a warrant for Webber’s arrest.
Webber’s vehicle was located about 150 miles from where the body was found. He was located at a hospital where he had sought treatment and was arrested by Albemarle County police as a fugitive upon discharge. Charles County deputies said they will book him on murder and additional charges after he is transferred to their custody.
Investigators said Webber, Wells and the other passengers were known to each other. The motive for the killing remains under investigation.
