US President Donald Trump on Sunday accused Ukraine of showing “zero gratitude” and criticised the European Union for maintaining trade with Russia as delegates from Ukraine, the EU and the US convened in Geneva to discuss Trump’s 28-point peace plan to end the Ukraine-Russia war.
Trump’s comments appeared to respond to reported “amendments” Ukraine has sought to the US-drafted plan. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier said his delegation is working on “doable solutions” in Geneva, writing that “the American proposals may include a number of elements based on Ukrainian perspectives and critical for Ukrainian national interests” and that further work is underway to make the elements effective in ending the bloodshed.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump blamed poor leadership for the conflict and said the war began during the “sleepy Joe Biden administration,” asserting he “inherited a war that should have never happened” and calling it “a loser for everyone” and especially devastating for the millions who have died.
“Ukraine ‘leadership’ has expressed zero gratitude for our efforts, and Europe continues to buy oil from Russia. The USA continues to sell massive amounts of weapons to NATO, for distribution to Ukraine (crooked Joe gave everything, free, free, free, including ‘big’ money!),” Trump wrote.
The US 28-point blueprint has alarmed officials in Kyiv and European capitals because it appears to allow many Russian demands that Zelenskyy has repeatedly rejected, including concessions of territory. Ukraine’s top security official, Rustem Umerov, said on Telegram, “We appreciate our American partners working closely with us to understand our concerns to reach this critical point, and we expect to make more progress today.”
