Anthony Albanese became the first Australian prime minister to marry while in office when he wed his partner, Jodie Haydon, in a private ceremony on Saturday, November 29.
The wedding, long anticipated after Albanese proposed on Valentine’s Day last year, was kept tightly under wraps. The couple exchanged vows at a small ceremony attended by family and close friends at The Lodge in Canberra, the prime minister’s office said.
“We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends,” Albanese said in the office statement.
Haydon has accompanied Albanese to numerous events over the years and supported him during his 2022 election campaign and again in May this year when Labor secured a decisive victory.
For the ceremony, Haydon wore a dress by Sydney designer Romance Was Born, and the prime minister wore a suit from MJ Bale. Haydon’s five-year-old niece, Ella, served as flower girl, while the prime minister’s dog, Toto, was the ring bearer.
Guests were offered beer in a special can produced by Willie the Boatman, a brewery in Sydney’s Inner West. After the ceremony, the couple processed back down the aisle to Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours),” and their first dance was to Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight.”
The couple will honeymoon in Australia from Monday until Friday of next week, with all expenses paid privately by Albanese and Haydon.
